Ultimate Guide to Wedding Flowers

April 25, 2019

Wedding planning can be intense - we totally get it! We’re hoping to make it a little easier for you by providing this guide. It's divided into three categories - bridal party, ceremony and reception - to help you think through all of your floral options and decide what you need for your big day.

Obviously, these are for the bride(s) and bridesmaids. For your bridal bouquet, decide if you like a tight style or cascading. And check out these tips for choosing your flowers! Typically, the bridal bouquet is designed first and it sets the tone and style for all you other wedding florals.

To make the groom(s) and groomsmen look dapper. And if you have a ring bearer, you can get a mini boutonniere for him! Traditionally, boutonnieres are provided for fathers and grandfathers of the bride and groom. But these days, some couples opt to only have flowers for the bridal party. Your choice!

If you decide that you want flowers for parents and grandparents, then corsages would be for the mothers and grandmothers of the bride and groom. And if you have a blended family, you can include stepparents as well.

Rose Petals

A must-have for your flower girl! If you’d like her to toss petals, make sure to check with your venue to confirm they allow them. If you’re having an outdoor ceremony, you’ll want to get real petals (fresh or freeze-dried) to be eco-friendly. Plus, then you won’t have to pick them up afterwards!

Flower Crowns or Hair Combs

Boho brides love wearing flower crowns! They’re also a unique option for bridesmaids and flower girls. Or, for a more classic look, go for a floral comb to complement your hairstyle.

Flower Collar

Don’t forget about your dog of honor! If your furry friend is part of your wedding, make them look extra adorable with a flower collar.

If your ceremony site is outside and picturesque, you may not need extra decoration. However, if it needs some sprucing up, there are lots of options for floral additions.

Seat Hangs

These are little bundles of flowers tied with a ribbon that hang along the aisle on your chairs or pews. No need to have them on every chair - using them on every other row adds a nice touch without being overwhelming!

Arch or Altar Arrangements

If there’s an arch or gazebo structure at your ceremony site, consider using a floral arch swag to add color and interest. If there’s an altar, you can use a floral arrangement or garland to snazz it up.

Spend five minutes on Pinterest and you’ll see there are tons of options for wedding centerpieces! No need to get carried away, though - even simple designs can create an impact! Think about what else will be taking up room on the table (especially if you’re serving a plated meal) to help you decide the size and style that’s best for your reception. PRO TIP: you can re-use your bridal and bridesmaids bouquets as centerpieces on the head table! Just place empty vases where you want them to go.

Garlands are becoming a popular centerpiece option for weddings. Whether you do simple greenery or add in flowers, a garland brings lots of texture and interest to a table. Plus, they sit nice and flat, so they won’t block anyone’s view!

Toss Bouquet

Make Beyoncé proud and order one of these to throw to all the single ladies!

Cake or Dessert Table Flowers

Whether you’re having a traditional cake, or wowing your guests with donuts, flowers will make your dessert display even sweeter! You can order a cake topper or use loose flower stems or garland to decorate the table.

Choosing your flowers is one of the most fun parts of wedding planning! Use this guide to check everything off your list and you’ll be surrounded by beautiful blooms on your big day.
